{GIVEAWAY} Cocoa the Dog Cool Mist Humidifier from Crane-USA

Welcome to Mom Loves 2 Read - I have searched the globe (not literally) to find more great givaways just for YOU.  Here is one that I will enter too - since we need at least 3 working humidifiers in our home each seasonal change and currently my poor son is using his sister's Hello Kitty one - last one working! I'm sure he'd rather have a dog than Hello Kitty anyday!

Cocoa The Dog Cool Mist Humidifier

Operation is simple - keep it off the floor about three feet and away from walls and corners. Definitely don't want to breed mold. We just have one of those multiple step stools and place it on that. We could easily also place it on one of the little side tables in her room - just move it away from the wall.

We don't add anything to the water - no oils, medications or salt. We also make sure the mist is not headed towards the ground or any other surfaces - the mist just flows into the air. Please see my full review - here

If you have young children you probably already know that the FDA is not recommending over the counter cough and cold medicine to young children anymore. Instead they are recommending cool mist humidifiers, saline nasal solution and a nasal aspirator.

{Review & Giveaway} STRIDER bike ~ Balance bike, training bike the no-pedal way to learn confidence in riding!

STRIDER™ balance bikes are industry-leading training bikes that help
children as young as 18 months learn to ride on two wheels. STRIDER
balance bikes focus on the fundamentals of balancing, leaning, and
steering without the distractions and complications of pedals or
training wheels.

The STRIDER’s simple, no-pedal design builds confidence and
eliminates fear by allowing kids to have their

feet on the ground and
progress at their own pace. This unique design teaches young children
balance on two wheels right from the start, avoiding developmental
delays typical with tricycles and training-wheel bikes.

Genuine STRIDER balance bikes are the lightest balance bikes in
their category, have the lowest seat height (for the youngest starting
age), and are tested to the most stringent safety standards.
Frame-integrated footrests, proprietary components, and the ability to
easily adjust to a growing child, make the STRIDER the only bike your
child needs to develop their riding skills and successfully transfer
onto their first pedal bike without training wheels.

Review:

My youngest has been scared of riding her big kid bike without training wheels, but is more than old enough to learn.  When I received the STRIDER bike for review - they thankfully sent an additional seat with a longer/taller adjustment for her to use since she was 5 when she first started riding her STRIDER.  After just a few weeks of riding around in our driveway and down our street on the STRIDER, she asked if I would help her ride her big kid bike.  She started pedalling within just a few moments of my help and now rides like a pro!

It only took her one afternoon of practice and she was off down the street on her own.  All it took was a little time on the STRIDER learning to balance, and get the confidence she needed!  I love this STRIDER bike and highly recommend it for all young ones to start riding on.  I wish we had used one much sooner as I honestly believe she would have been riding a pedal bike much sooner if she had first learned on a STRIDER instead of training wheels!

  • STRIDER bikes are ultra light weight and easy to control.

  • STRIDER bikes increase balance, coordination, and confidence.

  • STRIDER bikes allow children to focus on learning balance first.

  • STRIDER bikes are free of chains, pedals, and protrusions that can harm a child.

  • STRIDER bikes provides a safe, smooth, and natural transition to a pedal bike.

Now, she has just today moved up a size of bike and is tearing up the neighborhood with her sister and friends and has even asked when our family can all go on bike rides together.  I now have a hard time keeping her home, she is always off on her bike somewhere - Thanks STRIDER!

Review:

A fun look at the first day of Spring and the way it excites young children to get outside and play.  After days of rain, three children look outside to see the sun shining, the birds singing and their excitement leads them to an adventure.

A fun read to me, or read with me book for younger children.  Fun for beginner readers to read with Mom, Dad, Grandma or a Big Brother or Sister.  Wonderfully illustrated, fun and easy to read.  A great story for children ages 4 to 8.

{Review} Come learn about healthy eating with Delta the Fussy Dog by Skyler Andra

Delta the dog loves lots of things: her parents, walkies, stinky
socks and chicken wings. But there's one thing Delta doesn't like: when
her parents slip

vegetables into her dinner bowl.

After a disastrous,
cauliflower-infested birthday meal, Delta declares war on vegetables.
She soon finds out that eating chicken wings everyday isn't as good as
it's cracked up to be.

Review:

A cute picture ebook about a young dog who would rather eat her favorite foods than any healthy vegetables.  When her human "parents" try to get her to eat healthier she refuses - and ends up a very sick puppy.

A wonderfully illustrated book for preschool age children ages 0 to 6.  Fun story about a dog and the lesson she learns about choosing healthy foods over just junk food all the time.  Wanting to eat your favorite foods all the time is not the best choice.  My 6 year old loved seeing the pictures of Delta the Dog and hearing about how she learned to like eating veggies!

About this Product:

From Creation Through the age of Discovery (6000 BC to AD 1500)

  • Chronologically based, but focused more on skill development

  • Meant to be a 20 to 30 minute experience every day

  • World history is combined with social studies in a one-year course.

in difficulty with each year, preparing students for high school work.
This is a comprehensive examination of history, geography, economics,
and government systems. This educational set equips students to learn
from a starting point of God's creation of the world and move forward
with a solid biblically-based worldview.

Volume I Covers - The Fertile Crescent, Egypt, India, China, Japan, Greece, Christian history, and more.

Who is it for: 6th-8th grade (ages 11-14)

My Review:

Although I am not a homeschool teacher, I do try to work with my kids each school break to have them continue learning and exercising their minds as much as I can.  I love looking for fun books, activities and short lessons to try to do with them at least once a week.

For my son, it has been harder since he has gotten older.  He will be in Jr High this coming school year and finding something that he would consider fun as well as educational is a challenge.  So finding that he really likes reading some of the lessons inside Studies in World History ~ Vol 1 from New Leaf Press, is wonderful.  He has a love for history and enjoys learning more about why and how things happened.

I have found him reading through the student as well as the teacher's books to find out more about some of history's events from a Biblical standpoint.  Studies in World History ~ Vol 1  not only tells events of history and make the lessons short and interesting, but also includes occasional references from scripture.

Mom's Favorite Chapters:

God's Precious Treasure: Prospering in a Hostile Place

Ancient North America: Hunter-Gatherers

Fringe History

Son's Favorite Chapters:

The Fertile Crescent: Nomads to Farmers

Ancient China: Technology Triumphs

Early Japan: Identity Crisis

The Crusades: Changing the World

So whether you home school, add additional lessons at home, or just want to give your child a different look at history - the Studies in World History from New Leaf Press is a great set of books to check out!

{Book Review} A Different Kind of Beautiful by Katie Ganshert

Sometimes everything you ever learned about yourself is wrong

Fashion
is a fickle industry, a frightening fact for twenty-four year old model
Ivy Clark. Ten years in and she’s learned a sacred truth—appearance is
everything. Nobody cares about her broken past as long as she looks
beautiful for the camera. This is the only life Ivy knows—so when it
starts to unravel, she’ll do anything to hold on. Even if that means

moving to the quaint island town of Greenbrier, South Carolina, to be
the new face of her stepmother’s bridal wear line—an irony too rich for
words, since Ivy is far from the pure bride in white.

If only
her tenuous future didn’t rest in the hands of Davis Knight, her
mysterious new photographer. Not only did he walk away from the kind of
success Ivy longs for to work maintenance at a local church, he treats
her differently than any man ever has. Somehow, Davis sees through the
façade she works so hard to maintain. He, along with a cast of other
characters, challenges everything Ivy has come to believe about beauty
and worth. Is it possible that God sees her—a woman stained and broken
by the world—yet wants her still?

Purchase on Amazon  A Broken Kind of Beautiful: A Novel (affiliate link)

Review:

I found this book interesting as well as appealing. I was drawn into the life
of the model because I too for along time felt that my life was broken and
unraveling until I met my source of help. The story is about a model whose life
has been "broken" and is unraveling and a photographer who has been following
the life of the model since she was 12. They renew their relationship at the
funeral of IVY's(the model) father.

Their lives begin to intertwine in a small
town of Greenbrier, South Carolina where IVY becomes a model for her stepmother's
bridal wear line and Davis Knight(the photographer) is working at a local
church. Davis sees something in IVY that no one else sees and in return IVY
comes to see beauty and worth in a different light. I loved this book from
beginning to end. It was filled with spiritual uplifting help.

I would recommend
this book for anyone that feels that their life is broken or unraveling. I
received this book free from Blogging for Books.

Review: All of the Above by Shelley Pearsall

Based on a true story, All of the Above is the delightful and suspenseful story of four inner city students and their quest to build the world's largest tetrahedron. Weaving together the different personal stories of the kids, their teacher, and the community that surrounds them, award-winning author Shelley Pearsall has written a vividly engaging story about math, life and good-tasting barbecue. Filled with unexpected humor, poignant characters and quiet brilliance, All of the Above is a surprising gem.

My review: No, this isn’t a new release, but one I would have been sorry to miss! I came across this book at a charity book sale, and must say this is one of the best middle grade stories I’ve ever read! Based on a true story, disgruntled and disillusioned math teacher Collins forms some kind of an after hours math club reminiscent of the breakfast club. Students who would never have hung out together (with some of them not even attending by choice!) tackle the construction of the world’s largest tetrahedron, a three dimensional pyramid comprised of smaller ones. Pearsall does an outstanding job switching narratives so each student gets to share their unique story. The characters truly come alive, including all their struggles living in poverty and broken homes, while fighting a society that has already written them off. This is their one chance to get their names into the Guinness Book of World Records, and finally be someone. A brilliant story, and a welcome break from the usual middle school dramas.

About the author: Shelley Pearsall grew up in the blue-collar Cleveland suburb of Parma where she began writing stories in her bedroom closet as a child. She sent her first story to a New York publishing house at the age of thirteen. Although the manuscript was never published, its themes of survival and freedom ultimately became the inspiration for Pearsall's first published novel, TROUBLE DON'T LAST, written twenty years later.

In 2003, TROUBLE DON'T LAST received the prestigious Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction among other honors. Pearsall's first contemporary novel ALL OF THE ABOVE was a 2007 ALA Notable book. Her books have received starred reviews and have been named Booklist Editor's Choice, New York Public Library Top 100, VOYA Top Shelf, Junior Library Guild, and have been nominated for numerous state reading award lists. In 2005, Pearsall was the Children's Writer-in-Residence for the James Thurber House.

Before becoming a full-time author, Shelley Pearsall was an intermediate and middle school teacher. She has also tried many unusual jobs over the years, including a Revolutionary War shipwreck archaeology project, working in an 18th century shoemaker shop in Colonial Williamsburg, and performing Great Lakes stories on an ore boat. Although she no longer works as a classroom teacher, she is a frequent guest author in elementary and middle schools where she does presentations and leads writing workshops on everything from Elvis to shoes.

Shelley Pearsall lives in Silver Lake, Ohio with her husband Mike, stepson Ethan, and a senior-citizen cat named Marbles.

My Review:

Although my dog Daisy is not an older dog, she does occasionally have aches and pains from hunting birds in the Fall and Spring.  I thought I'd have her try out the Achy Paws™ Pet Mat to see how she reacted to it.  She normally loves to have a blanket on her when she is resting or sleeping, so I figured it would be similar.

At first she refused to lay on it, except when I gave her a treat.  But I finally was able to get a photo of her laying on it.  She does occasionally lay on it but only if it is on top of one of her beds.  I don't know whether she likes it or not, but she doesn't seem to mind it anymore.

I lay on it myself to see if I could notice a difference - and did find that it seems to make my skin warmer wherever it is in contact.

I do think this would be a great warming Mat for older animals that suffer from arthritis or joint pain.  It would ease their pain and help them rest.  For now, we just use it as needed for when Daisy is sore from hunting.  Or for times like in this photo where she just wants some snuggle time with her blankie - LOL

Daisy is a 7 year old German Shorthair Pointer - Chocolate with Chocolate Speckled Coloring.  She is high energy, loves to run and point and chase rabbits, squirrels and birds in the backyard or Dog Park.  Her favorite activities are running and playing chase and fetch with the kids, taking walks with "Dad", and going Hunting with "Dad" and "brother" for pheasants!
