(Review) The Spark: A Mother's Story of Nurturing Genius By Kristine Barnett

I was never
much of a fan of non-fiction. Instead, I always liked to immerse myself into
fictional tales of almost any genre – visiting far off lands and far off lives
and being able to leave them when I closed the pages. Then I was bought a copy
of “The Spark” the only book that has every caused me to make a life altering decision.

Kristine
Barnett’s son, Jake, is diagnosed with autism at the age of two. Kristine and her
husband Michael are devastated when they are told he is so badly affected he might
never even tie his own shoe laces and they follow the expert advice to put him
into a special

education program.

As part of
the program Jakes interests – shadows moving across the room, the patterns in
fabrics – are seen as distractions and he is made to focus on acquiring the
basic skills that most people develop without thinking. As a consequence Jake
withdraws even further from the world around him and eventually stops speaking completely.

Against the advice of the experts and the wishes of her husband,
Kristine takes Jake out of special ed and begins preparing him for mainstream kindergarten
in her own home daycare. Keeping play at the centre of his learning, relying on
the types of ordinary childhood experiences most of us take for granted and
being led by Jakes interests Kristine and her family help the spark within Jake
ignite.

Such is the power of this story, my husband & I began to consider
homeschooling our youngest son with autism. At first we worried that it wouldn't be best for him but after the move from kindergarten to first grade went very
badly we took a leap of faith and withdrew him from school. As a consequence he
is thriving so I can
truly say that The Spark changed, not just my life – who’d
have thought I’d ever be a home school mum? – but the lives of our entire
family.

If you only read one non-fiction book this year make it The Spark – it’s
not about autism, it’s about the brilliance inside us all.

So your cat/dog has allergies?

                                       Product Review: Vetri-Science Derma-Strength, 120 Tablets

Yes, it’s a product review! And no, I did not even get a free sample but spent my own money, and will continue to do so!

If your cat or dog is suffering from allergies, this can provide some serious relief. I volunteer for Evo and Eli’s Love Box, an animal sanctuary in Pennsylvania. We received a call from the

animal shelter about a dachshund in need. When Riley joined our sanctuary, he was suffering from dreadful skin allergies. This poor doggie was scratching his back and biting his paws constantly. His foster mom took him to the vet's, and medications were prescribed, but these did little to alleviate the symptoms.

In sheer desperation I searched on Amazon for some help. I simply typed in ‘allergies’ into the pet product search and-voila!- there was my answer: Vetri-Science Derma-Strength, a daily capsule you administer with their food (or grind it to powder and mix it in if your pet is the I-refuse-all-meds-type!). A quick read through the customer feedback section showed: Riley wasn’t the only pet out there on expensive, inefficient vet meds! And these over-the-counter tablets had actually worked for at least one happy customer whose cat already had the pus coming through her skin! This was definitely worth a try!

I ordered the tablets for Riley, and am happy to say that after only two weeks we saw results. No more itching, biting, and driving everyone around him crazy! The tablets worked, and are a cost effective method to boot! 120 tablets for around $32 last twenty-pound Riley four months.

These days Riley is one happy doggie! Oh, and might I add, he is still taking applications for his forever home!

Free Amazon download on March 7th: Under the Shadow of Darkness by James and Issa Cardona

Free Amazon download on March 7th: Under the Shadow of Darkness by James and Issa Cardona

Magician’s apprentice Bel, along with a wise cracking wizard, must journey under the shadow of darkness to try to discover how the fabric of reality has been rent, tearing open a gateway to the underworld and allowing the dead to walk among the living. Who did it and why? Was it

intentional? Can they defeat them? Can they close the rift? Can a teenager learning the ways of magic and an ancient archmage long past his prime stop the darkness, close the breach and save all reality?

My review

Tired of Harry Potter? Under the Shadow of Darkness is a different take on magic, complete with valuable life lessons, Christian principles, and a good dose of humor! When dead ghoul-like creatures start stalking the living, Bel and his master Nes’egrinon are faced with a twofold problem: how do you protect the living by finding the access path the dead currently have, and how do you do find...well...anything when faced with an eternal darkness?

With daylight no longer breaking through, Bel and his crabby master are forced along a dark, treacherous journey that tests the limits of their magic. And, yes, I got this book for free-but so can you! Free Amazon downloads available on Friday, March 7. Don’t miss out!

James Cardona has written five books as yet, two non-fiction works and three young adult science fiction novels, and is planning on writing many, many more. For his fiction, James tries to make his words come alive by pouring real-life experiences into his characters such that many of the details described in his books actually happened and are told from the perspective of someone who was actually there. He also enjoys integrating a hard science approach to his science fiction, feeling that all aspects of his story telling, although perhaps not currently possible, could happen once our technology evolves.

James enjoys all things that can unleash the creative process including the typical drawing, painting and creative writing and the not-so-typical such as robotic design and writing computer code. He loves tinkering with computers, electronics and building robots and is the Lead Engineer for FIRST Robotics Team 316, a High School Robotics team operating out of Salem Community College.

{Review} Join the Challenge with me - Balance your life with Balanced: Finding Center as a Work-at-home Mom by Tricia Goyer

About the book:

How can a work-at-home mom raise kids, juggle a
career and take care of family responsibilities with only 24-hour days? Working
at home while raising kids and juggling a career and family responsibilities is
no easy feat. Author and homeschooling mom Tricia Goyer shares her tips for
finding balance among all your many hats as a mom. Balancing is a process and a
journey, one that Tricia herself has yet to perfect. But between writing more
than forty books, raising and

homeschooling six kids, being a wife, and being
active in her community, she has amassed valuable tips she shares in
Balanced.

The book includes tips
on:

-how to create focus themes for your
family

-how to prioritize your schedule

-how to utilize your job so it also benefits your
kids

-how to keep yourself out of the comparison
game

-how to make working at home work for
you

-and much more!

Purchase a copy, get a free downloadable workbook,
and learn more at Tricia's website.

My Review:

A great book for how to balance all the tasks that often overwhelm moms, whether you work outside your home, work at home, or have your home and family as your work.  Written with every Mom's struggles in mind, aughot Tricia Goyer shows that there are ways to achieve Balance even when it all seems so chaotic!

I personally love how she tells of her personal struggles to "keep up" with how she views other Moms' relationships with their children.  We each have to find what is right for our family and not compare ourselves and our children to how we view others.

I loved how easy her tips are to implement and her real life stories of her struggles, challenges and successes.  I'll be joining the 11 day challenge - each day covers one chapter of this great book.  I'd love to have you join me!

{Review} My Hope is Found by Joanne Bischof ~ Book 3 of The Cadence of Grace Series

Gideon O’Riley has been given another chance at a life with Lonnie. But will the fight for her heart risk it all over again?

After
finally finding love with his sweet bride Lonnie, Gideon’s heart was
torn when a woman from his past claimed to be his true and rightful
wife, forcing him away from his family. God’s merciful hand saw Gideon
through the heartache, and with Cassie’s blessing, he is able to return
home. But his journey back through the Blue Ridge Mountains will hold a
trial he never anticipated.

Meanwhile, Lonnie determines to seal
off her heart from Gideon, convinced he is lost to her forever.
Strengthening her resolve to move on is her growing fondness for the
handsome Scotsman, Toby McKee—the young reverend she has come to care
for deeply. His proposal of marriage offers a bright future for her and
her young son.

Yearning to allow joy back into her life, Lonnie
must put aside the broken pieces of her heart that still love Gideon.
When he returns to find her betrothed to another, he has to place his
hope in God, trusting that the One who redeemed their love once can do
it again.

My Review:

My Hope is Found by Joanne Bischof is the third book in The Cadence of Grace series.  I was not overly thrilled with where this story took me.  First, I am still questioning how a man can not know he is already married, when he marries another and has a child with her.  Second, how can he leave them behind to return to the woman who claims she is his lawful wife, get an annulment, then return to his second wife in the early 1900s?  And finally, how can a young woman who just lost her husband to another woman find herself falling in love with another man so soon?

I just had a hard time with this story - it most likely would have made more sense it I had the chance to read the first two books of this series - and for those who have, I definitely recommend this book as it does finish the story of poor Gideon and Lonnie's fate.  But for those who have not read books 1 and 2, I highly recommend reading them first as this will most likely make much more sense than it did to me.

Overall, this story was well written, though confusing at times to this reader.  The story did have a good flow and I like the unique idea behind it - I will be looking into reading the first two books when I get the chance, then can come back and reread this one from a new perspective!

What would you do to bring Peace into your daily life? {Review} The One Year Devotions for Women: Becoming a Woman at Peace

Wouldn't it be nice to live with less fear and anxiety and more
confidence and joy? In this 365-day devotional, you'll spend time with
God every day, learning to breathe deeply and grab hold of the holy
peace he offers. Each meditation includes a key NLT Scripture verse, a
brief message, and a suggested prayer. 384 pages, softcover from
Tyndale.

Peace—don’t
we all want just a little more peace in our lives? Peace in
relationships. Peace at home and at work. Peace from painful memories.
Release from pressures and demands that threaten to crush us. Is there a
way to find peace in all these areas? What if we could build a moment
of peace into every day of the year, opening our hearts to the peace God
has promised? Wouldn’t it be great to live with less fear and anxiety,
and with more confidence and joy?

The One Year Devotions for Women: Becoming a Woman at Peace
is a chance to spend time with God every day, to breathe deeply and
grab onto the kind of peace that only God can offer—a peace far richer
and more satisfying than anything we can hope or imagine. Each of these
uplifting devotions includes a key NLT Scripture verse, a devotional
reading, and a suggested prayer for connecting with God.

Find it at many online retailers including ChristianBook.com

My Review:

I am always looking for a daily devotional that is easy to read, relevant to my life and has short, sweet lessons that don't take much time as I seem to always have "something" that needs to be done - and often take little time for myself or my scripture reading.

The One Year Devotions for Women: Becoming a Woman at Peace is a nice daily devotional that many women will enjoy.  It has a daily scripture reference and mediation as each day's reading contains a new and interesting topic that is catered to the busy lives of women.

Although some were not as "short" as I might like, I often find myself taking more and more time with this devotional alone in my room, so I can focus and read through each devotion more than one time.  I like to really try to apply each day's devotion in ways that help bring peace to this often chaotic Mom's life.

This devotional is well-written and applies to the daily lives of women, and I definitely recommend it.

{Review & Giveaway} First Day of School isn't scary anymore with Pocket Mommy by Aila Malik

Zayan’s first day of school is coming, and he is nervous and sad about
going to a new school. He knows he won’t be able to spend all day with
his mommy anymore, and he loves her more than anything in the world!
Luckily, his mommy comes up with a clever idea to make his trip to
school much

easier. She cuts a special doll out of paper and cardboard,
in the shape of a person.

The doll is small enough for Zayan to fit in
the pocket of his jeans, so he can carry her around everywhere he goes!
She calls the doll a “Pocket Mommy,” and gives him the special gift when
they are in the car, on the way to his first day of school.

When Zayan
is sad or anxious, he simply reaches into his pocket and feels the paper
doll. He can talk to his Pocket Mommy whenever he wants, and he is even
able to sit her on the table while he is eating lunch or doing
activities with his new friends. Eventually, he finds that he is
looking forward to school so much every day that he doesn’t even need
his Pocket Mommy anymore.

A heartwarming, creative tale about early
separations, Pocket Mommy is ideal for kids and parents or caregivers to
read together. In addition to a fun story and creative illustrations,
the book also contains instructions for making your very own Pocket
Mommy, parent, or friend for a new school or other important transition.
Using just a few household supplies, a pocket doll is simple to make,
and you can customize it however you like. www.pocketmommy.org

My Review:

What a fun way to help young ones adjust to spending the day away from home and Mom.  A creative Mommy uses her love for her child to create a "pocket" friend that looks like her for her child to take with him to school each day.  This "pocket Mommy" can be taken out when young Zayan feels scared, or nervous or just needs to be reassured that his Mommy loves him.

What a great way to help little ones see that it is ok to be away from Mom or Dad, while still keeping them close.  This is a really cute book that explains how fun it can be to go to school, even when you are scared of leaving Mom for the day.  My girls both loved reading it and both asked for their own "pocket Mommies" even though neither of them have problems going to school.  This is a fun book for any child getting ready to go to school - preschool or kindergarten - or for any child to read along with their Mom or Dad.

About the Author:

Pocket Mommy is
Aila's first children's book. As a working professional and mom of
three young children, Aila and her family created an innovative tool to
help her young pre-schooler successfully master the home to school
transition.  Years later, Aila and her son share their story and tools
in the hopes of making a difference with families in the same situation.

{Review} Toilet Tree Electric Toothbrush Set ~ Get two great toothbrushes for the price of one for all your oral care needs!

Disclosure: I received a free product through Tomoson.com for this review.

Two Great Electric Toothbrushes for the Price of One!

With the Toilet Tree Electric Toothbrush, you not only will receive a high quality electric
toothbrush for home, but you also will receive a bonus smaller travel
size sonic toothbrush to take on the road with you.  A much easier and compact version to take with you on the go - to work, on trips, or whenever or wherever you may be when you need to freshen

your breath or clean your teeth.

Included are 2 toothbrush heads and a recharging station to store and charge your toothbrush when not in use. These rechargeable toothbrushes are waterproof, have a 2 minute time for dentist recommended brushing time, has both a cleaning mode and sensitive mode for when you need a softer touch, and comes in color choices of black or white - I chose black for my review.

Toilet Tree Products also offers a 100% 365-day money back guarantee to all customers. So, if you are ever not satisfied with the product, send it back!

My dentist recommended that my family use electric toothbrushes instead of standard ones to help keep our teeth cleaner between visits.  I have tried a couple different ones in different price ranges and usually have trouble with them bothering my gums, or teeth due to having sensitivity.  With this one, I am able to use it on the softer - sensitive mode, whenever I have tooth sensitivity and still get the job done.  My mouth feels cleaner and fresher longer, even after eating with using these electric toothbrushes compared to using standard toothbrushes.  This is definitely a gadget that will remain in my bathroom for daily use - and the smaller one will travel with me anytime my family is on the go - it even fits in my purse!

Desperate to marry the charming courtesan she loves, Aniri agrees to the prince's proposal as a subterfuge in order to spy on him, find the weapon, and hopefully avoid both war and

an arranged marriage to a man she does not love.

Third Daughter is the first book in the The Dharian Affairs Trilogy (Third Daughter, Second Daughter, First Daughter). {Review} Division of the Marked by March McCarron

Division of the Marked by March McCarron

For all of written history, on the day of Da Un Marcu, fifty boys and girls across the three kingdoms are marked. They become a class apart from society. Taken to join their brothers and sisters, the Chisanta, they enter a culture of knowledge-keepers, martial artists, and possessors of strange and wonderful abilities.

When Yarrow discovers himself marked, he feels lost and

lonely; until he meets Bray, a spirited and curious girl with whom he feels uncommonly connected. As the two of them become familiar with their new lives, unaccountable events unsettle the peace. A mysterious murder leaves the Chisanta in confusion. Odder still, one of the fifty children never arrives. In the years that follow, more and more children of the Chisanta go missing.

Ten years later, the devastating truth comes to light. The death of a young marked girl is uncovered. Yarrow and Bray—separated for a decade and grown apart—are thrust back together to investigate the crime. Can they overcome their differences to save the fate of their kind and the peace of the nation?

My review:

If you’re a fantasy reader in search of a story with an outstanding plot, this one’s for you!

As the reader, you will get completely lost in the Chisanta world. We meet a cast of well-crafted characters who, despite possessing certain superhuman abilities, never become your cliché heros. What I found especially intriguing was how their newfound abilities reflect the exact opposite of a former weakness in each character. No capes, no light swords here: their powers include an immaculate perception to details, the ability to detect lies, as well the knowledge of your loved ones’ feelings. The book is quite philosophical in parts, and a very cleverly written mystery. I was thrilled to learn a sequel is in the works!

March McCarron grew up outside of Philadelphia. She earned a BA in English, and—useless degree in hand—went on to wait tables and sell used cars. More recently, she moved to South Korea with her husband, where she teaches English at a private academy. Aside from writing, she loves travel, craft beer, folk music, and all things geek.
