{Book Review} Mom Seeks God: Praticing Grace in the Chaos by Julia Roller

The
first months and years of motherhood can be the most challenging and
disorienting of your life—and faith. When you’re surrounded by the happy
chaos of children, how do you spend quiet time with God if the only
quiet time you get is while you sleep? How can you demonstrate a

solid
spiritual life to your children if you don’t have time to pursue one
yourself?

I felt stalled in my spiritual growth by the busyness of life
with her toddler, so I embarked on a yearlong journey through ten
spiritual disciplines: prayer, fellowship, submission, study,
simplicity, silence, worship, fasting, service, and celebration. As I
focused on each discipline, I discovered practical ways to observe
them—even in the chaos of the everyday.

Mom Seeks God offers a highly
relatable story and useful advice to help new moms grow in their faith
as they address life changes with grace, patience, and prayer. As
readers discover ten essential faith practices, they’ll learn that
motherhood, itself, is a spiritual discipline, and may be God’s most
effective technique for forming a more Christ-like life.

See more on her website

Review:

The book is one of Christian inspiration and growth. Julia writes about her
struggles as a mom and how to keep her spiritual life active while being a mom.
The book offers practical advise to help anyone grow in their faith while they
go through lifes experiences. This book I would recommend, not for just mothers,
but for anyone that struggles with trying to fit God in with their daily
struggles of life. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

{Book Review} Missing Lily by Annette K Larsen

missing lily

Missing Lily

“You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house.

He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night.

Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost.

So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon.

When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

My Review:

Missing Lily is the second book by author Annette K. Larsen that I have had the pleasure of posting on Mom Loves 2 Read.  In this story we meet Lylin, the youngest of the princesses who has stumbled into an adventure not of her choosing.  As she gets to know her rescuers, she comes to discover new things about herself and those she is with that will change her future.

Missing Lily is a story of danger, mystery and self discovery.  Yes, there is some romance as well, but it is not the main focus for most of the story.  I am completely captivated by 'Lily' and 'Lord Fallon.'  The characters in this story come to life on the pages and have so immersed me in the story that I once again found myself unwilling to step away from my ereader until the story was finished.

Missing Lily is a well written story with characters that jump off the pages and capture the reader's imagination.  The story starts off fast and immerses the reader in the story from page one.  I can't wait to see what Annette Larsen comes up with next!

{Product Review} The CLASSIC cane made by Sabi

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

The CLASSIC cane made by Sabi, takes its inspiration from the sporting
goods that enable people to lead invigorating, active lifestyles. It features a wide handle made from the same Baltic birch wood that is
used in skateboards. It islLightweight and flexible, like

a skateboard.  The
handle is engineered ergonomically for optimal pressure, balance and
grip. The handle delivers the reassuring sensory input of touching wood.
The wood is easy to clean and naturally hygienic and becomes more
beautiful with age.

The CLASSIC cane has a one-piece, non-adjustable shaft made of
high-strength aluminum; the same aluminum used for bicycle frames.
Super-durable and powder-painted, just like a bike, it offers a much
more stable alternative to the adjustable cane.

The cane has an air-cushioned rubber-based tip made from the same
material used in hiking boot and running shoe soles for maximum
stability, smooth walking at any speed, and superior grip on the most
uneven surfaces.

The CLASSIC cane is the perfect walking cane and fashion accessory in one.

CLASSIC is made by Sabi:

My Review:

Although I thankfully do not yet need to walk with a cane daily, I wanted to try the CLASSIC cane from Sabi to see if it truly lives up to it's description.  As a nurse, I have had quite a bit of exposure to canes and walkers of different types and styles as well as having family members who use a cane to aid in walking and stability.  Although an adjustable cane works for people of different heights, it often weakens at the connection after time.  Also, I have seen collapsible canes that often break at the joints if not used carefully.

MY favorite is usually the cane with 4 spread out legs - it seems to be the sturdiest yet can also trip up a user if not cautious.

The CLASSIC cane by Sabi seems to be durable yet light-weight, with a comfortable grip that does not slip even when I had wet hands.  The tip at the bottom was sturdy and did not slip when I tried it on tile and lanoleum floors.  It does not bend even when pressure is intentionally applied - yes, I had to do it for a true test!  The CLASSIC cane comes in three sizes and is meant to fit most adults - 31, 34 and 37 inches in height.

Another great use for this cane is one many will not consider but my 12 year old son did.  It makes a great hiking 'stick' as well.  Perfect for walking trails with his fellow Boy Scouts and climbing steep hillsides.  With its ergonimic and non-slip grip it helps aid my hiker on tough trips in the woods.  The cane works better than basic walking/hiking sticks and it fun and stylish as well - and it comes in a variety of colors in case you don't like the pretty Reef Blue that I chose for this review (he would have preferred Sage Green or Red)

{About The Heart’s Pursuit}

A jilted bride desperate to save her family from ruin.

A bounty hunter seeking vengeance for a ravaged past.

An arduous trek toward justice—or redemption.

The Heart's PursuitSilver Mattlock and Jared Newman know traveling together is a bad
idea. Bad for Silver’s already tarnished reputation in her small
Colorado town. Bad for bounty hunter Jared’s secret, single-minded
mission for revenge. But Silver is determined to

track down the rogue
who left her at the altar and stole the last remnant of her father’s
fortune. And Jared’s in a hurry to hunt down the murderer who destroyed
his family—even if Silver is too distractingly beautiful for comfort.

The pair takes off over mountain and desert, past bleak homesteads
and raw mining towns, hot on the trail of the two villains who took what
wasn’t theirs to take. Soon supplies dwindle, secrets emerge, and
suspicion leave Silver and Jared at odds when they need each other most.
To confront an enemy deadlier than desert rattlesnakes and rocky
cliffs, Silver and Jared must learn to forgive and trust and face the
question they haven’t dared voice: What happens next?

My Review:

Oh My!  Cowboys, Bounty Hunters, Jilted Brides and Horses!  What more could a book lover like me want in a Christian Western Romance.  Author Robin Lee Hatcher has written many books that I have loved in the past and once again has captured this reader's heart with The Heart's Pursuit.

An "edge of your seat" and "can't put it down" type books with heroes that have secret agendas, jilted bride in pursuit of the rogue who took her small fortune and left her at the alter and danger, mystery and romance galore.  Everything this reader loves in a good story - well written, fast paced and full of adventure.

I love the characters, especially Silver!  It is such a wonderful thing when I find a book that has everything I love yet a completely new and unique story with engaging and thrilling plot twists and characters.  Highly recommended read by this book loving MomBlogger.

Robin Lee Hatcher's latest novel, The Heart's Pursuit, is receiving critical praise: "The
Old West lives again in this inspirational romantic adventure. . . .
Themes of forgiveness, justice and mercy dominate the story and add to
the characters' depth. Hatcher treats readers to a rich sensory
experience—you can taste the desert dust and smell the smoke and stench
of a crowded gambling hall." (Publishers Weekly)

Robin is celebrating the release of her novel by giving away a $200 "Romantic Weekend Getaway."

Author Annette K. Larsen

I was born in Utah, part of a crazy, fun family of nine. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO before striking out on my own college adventure in Virginia. I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find.

I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels.

After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself.

My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it.

I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

{Book Tour & Review} The Living Memories Project

Purchase at AMAZON

Three
years after the death of her mother, Meryl Ain was still unable to fill the
hole that the loss had left in her life.  In talking to friends,
Meryl discovered an insight shared by those who had successfully overcome
grief; there simply is no closure.  It
was a

breakthrough for her. She writes, "Our loved ones will always
be with us if they are not forgotten. It is up to us to integrate
them into our lives in a positive way that reflects their unique
personality, values and spirituality. In that way we keep them alive in
our hearts and minds always."

Meryl
enlisted the help of her brother, Arthur Fischman, and her husband, Stewart
Ain, and began a quest to interview people who had moved beyond mourning
through meaningful action. The Living
Memories Project: Legacies That Last
by Meryl Ain, Ed.D., Arthur M.
Fischman, & Stewart Ain (March 2014, Little Miami Publishing Company, Trade
Paperback, 196 pages, $18.95, ISBN:978-0-9882553-7-1) is a result of that
research.

The Living Memories Project presents more than 30
interviews with both celebrities and others who share their experiences and the
projects they undertook to memorialize their loved ones. The authors have
sought to demonstrate that any tribute, big or small, can be a meaningful way
to preserve memories of loved ones. Establishing a foundation or scholarship, using a recipe on a particular holiday or family occasion, creating artwork, embarking on a project or even an entire career – all
could be traced to a specific talent, interest or value of the deceased.  Each chapter offers a rich first-person
history that will engage and inspire readers of all faiths.

Among
them are:

  • Linda Ruth Tosetti, who made a documentary
film about her grandfather, Babe Ruth, to highlight his humanitarian side
    – a value she cherished and believed was often overlooked in Babe’s
biography. Ruth was a German-American, who publicly denounced the Nazi
persecution of the Jews in 1942.

  • Liz and Steve Alderman, who established the
Peter C. Alderman Foundation to honor the memory of their 25-year-old son,
who was killed on 9/11 at the World
    Trade Center.
The foundation trains doctors and establishes mental health clinics on
    four continents to treat PTSD.

  • Eileen Belmont, a quilt designer who
helps others preserve their memories of deceased loved ones through the
    creation of memory quilts.

  • Singer/songwriter Jen Chapin (daughter of the
late folk rock icon Harry Chapin), who carries on her father’s legacy of
    music and feeding the hungry.

  • Dr. Yeou-Cheng Ma (sister of Yo-Yo Ma), who
keeps the memory of her father and music teacher /mentor alive through the Children's Orchestra Society and her poetry.

  • Robert Meeropol (son of Julius and Ethel
Rosenberg, who were executed as spies by the US Government in 1953), who
established the Rosenberg Fund for Children to help children whose parents
    are imprisoned.

  • Author, actor and raconteur Malachy McCourt,
who presents his unique take on how he keeps alive the memory of his
    brother Frank (Angela's Ashes)
through the Irish tradition of song and story.

Not
everyone can create a foundation, fund an orchestra or make a documentary film,
but the authors' hope is that readers will find inspiration from the wide range
of actions they read about. The authors are currently compiling narratives for
the second volume of The Living Memories
Project
and welcome input from readers.

Book Excerpt:

Liz and Steve Alderman of Westchester, New
York, set up the Peter C. Alderman Foundation to
honor the memory of their twenty-five-year-old son, who was killed on 9/11 at
the World Trade Center.
In the past seven years, the foundation has trained 385 doctors in twenty
countries on four continents and opened nine mental health clinics to treat
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mental depression in countries such as
Rwanda,
Haiti,
Uganda,and
Cambodia.
The foundation-trained staff has treated more than one hundred thousand
patients and has partnerships with the governments of Rwanda, Angola, and Cambodia.
Barron’s named the foundation one of the ten best small foundations or
charities in the United
States. The Aldermans received the Purpose
Prize, which honors American social entrepreneurs over the age of sixty.

SHORTLY AFTER HE DIED, his friends needed to be together and to be with us. So his friends
got in cars from all over the country and drove here. We ended up having over
250 of his friends at our home a week and a day after he died.

His hobby was relationships. He was not the
honor student who became an honor student after he died. His brother, who is
six years older, said when I grow up I want to be like Pete. In fact, we have
an arm of the foundation called Friends of Peter Alderman. These kids every
year get together and raise money for the foundation. They raise a lot of
money. They just had a walk-a-thon that netted over seventy thousand dollars.
These are his friends and they are still part of our lives. The tough part is,
we are invited to their weddings and they bring their children to see us. It’s
very difficult, but we would still rather have them in our lives than not.

We knew we had to create our own memorial for
Peter. We really didn’t know what to do. And then we saw a
Nightline broadcast that said one billion people in this world—one-sixth of
humanity—have directly experienced torture terrorism and, of those who have
survived, over 50 percent suffer debilitating traumatic depression and
posttraumatic stress disorder. They can’t work, children can’t go to school,
and some people can’t even leave their beds.

There was nothing we could do for Peter, but if
we could return the survivors of terrorism to life, then that would be the
perfect memorial because Peter so loved life.

We are building and contributing significantly
to the evidence that tells us that psychiatry in postconflict countries is at
the center of recovery. On a personal level, the work is terribly, terribly
important. It is a reason to get out of bed every morning and function at a
high level. We feel really, really good about the people we are able to help
and the doctors we are meeting along the way.

The main reason for starting this is that we
wanted to leave a mark that Peter existed on this earth. He died at a very
young age. We believe that we have left a profound and indelible mark that
Peter existed; the world is a better place because he lived. Peter loved life
and if we can return people to life so that they can live their lives, that is
the perfect way to memorialize him….

My Review:

The Living Memories Project is a book that I just could not pass up.  I have lost 3 loved ones all 4 years apart, the most recent being less than 2 months ago - a sudden and tragic end to someone very near and dear to my family.  With a heavy heart I began to read.  What I found was both wonderful in that I was reminded of many great memories of each one of those who have passed before me - as well as sadness that they are no longer with me here on this earth.

I love that this book, and the authors have taken what is many times devastating to the lives of those left behind and inspires us to pass on our memories to others - to share the impact that they each had on our lives, as well as start the journey to healing by remembering the good and wonderful moments we had together.  A wonderful book for anyone to read.

My Review:

Of all the monthly subscription services that I have tried or seen reviews of, this is probably the last one I would have expected myself to like.  I'm not athletic, not a fan of exercise though I am a fan of losing weight and becoming healthier- so when I decided to try this out for my review - I was pretty skeptical of what a monthly box from BULU could contain that would interest me in trying it every month.

The box from BULU arrived with a few small items inside:

~ Beauty Bursts: Gourmet Collagen Soft Chews Dietary Supplement in fresh mint chocolate flavor from NeoCell

*a tiny little wrapped candy about a 1/2 inch long - tough to chew like caramels - flavor is ok but not something I would want to try again if I plan to keep my teeth intact.

~ MESTRENGTH ~ live elevated electrolytes and creatine - 8.75g powder to mix in my "favorite drink" -

*does not go well with Mt. Dew - at least I don't think it would so I tried it with water - has a bit of a citrisy flavor.  Not a bad taste just one I would have to get used to if I drank it regularly

~ Smarty Pants ~ Gummy Vitamins for Grownups -serving size is 6!!

*Yes, 6 Gummy Chewy vitamins every day - sorry but I'm not that fond of gummies.  Would be ok for those who don't mind gummy chews - but I'm not a fan.

~ WhiteShield - 2 tiny packets of Natural Coffee Stain Prevention for a Beautiful Smile

  * love this idea, just pour it into your coffee - mix it up and it is supposed to prevent that horrible coffee stain from staying on your teeth.  I don't drink coffee, but I like the idea of preventing unnecessary stains and keeping my teeth as white as possible.

~ KIND - nuts & spices dark chocolate chili almond bar.  All Natural, Non GMO, Gluten Free, No Sugar Alcohol, Low Glycemic, Low sodium, only 5g of sugar.

*ok, I'm not a fan of dark chocolate but don't hate it either - now putting chili in my chocolate does not encourage me to eat it!  I tried this - and at first was pleasantly surprised to find I did actually like it - then the heat arrived.  I'm not very tolerant of spicy foods - and though the heat from the chilies is mild for me (which means most people wouldn't even notice it) it is not something I would prefer with my chocolate bar.  If the chili was left out, I think i would have really liked this bar and even looked for more to purchase.

So, being the reviewer I am - I went on a search to see what other flavors they have - they do have more of the Nuts & Spices, but also have Fruit & Nut (apple cinnamon pecan!!!), PLUS (peanutbutter, dark choc & protein among others), Honey Mustard, Honey Smoked BBQ and many others - so I won't discourage anyone from checking out KIND - I'd personally love to try some of their other flavors!

To be fair, I had my spice loving son try it and he said "it's ok" - he didn't seem to care much for it.

~ Tapaz 2 Go - a package of lentil crackers w/sea salt & classic hummus

 * I love the crackers and like the hummus.  I am usually a big fan of hummus, but this one seems a bit sweet to me.  Almost like it has honey in it.  I prefer my hummus plain or with garlic or sundried tomatoes so having it be sweet is not my preference.  Again I had my son try it - he loves it - loves the crackers and the hummus - his exact words "that's good . . . that's really good, can I have it?"

Final thoughts - though this BULU box is not something I personally would sign up for, I must say that for those who prefer healthy, gluten free eating; and trying samples of new things to improve health and fitness, this is the perfect box for you - and it starts at only $10 a month! Not bad for samples of weight loss, nutrition and fitness items to try!

My Review:

I have used this mud mask now several times over the past month and I can honestly say that I love it.  I have 2 other masks from a Skin professional that I have also used to compare results.  I must say that it is just as good as the "professional" ones I purchased from a Spa.  I love how cool and tingly it feels when applied to my face.  I have even used it after an episode of acne that was a bit painful and the cool soothing mud was a welcome relief.

It does take longer to dry than other masks I've used, and also longer than the package instructions, but I like that since I often don't have only 5-10 uninterrupted minutes to return and wash it off.  I usually apply it right before putting my kiddos to bed at night (which they love since they make fun and pretend I'm a mud monster - lol) and wash it off about 20 to 30 minutes later.  It has usually dried by then and still is easy to remove.

My face feels cleaner and fresher after use.  My acne seems to be much less than it has been in previous months when I have used the Andovia mask at least once a week for 2 to 3 weeks in a row.  I honestly have to say that of all the facial cleansing and exfoliating masks I have used, Andovia is by far one of my top favorites.

I also love that I can get it through Amazon!
