{Review} Stop little hands from unlocking seat belts while travelling with Beltlock

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Have you ever been driving down the road and looked back to see your child has undone his or her seat belt?  It can be a scary thing to know that your toddler or young child is capable of releasing the seat belt whenever he or she chooses.  Now, there is a simple and easy way to keep those little fingers from removing

the seatbelt unless mom or dad does it for them.  It is called Beltlock.

Beltlock is designed to prevent kids from opening the
seat belt securing the child's car seat. Beltlock is designed to be
strong, durable, visible in the car, easy to fit and easy to remove with
a key by an adult. Beltlock offers peace of mind when traveling with
kids.

Thankfully this has not happened to me but I know it could happen, even accidentally as little hands roam around in the car on trips.  And with big brother wreaking havoc with the girls, hand and feet tend to fly all over the place - it seems like just a matter of time before one of them ends up releasing a seat belt while the car is moving.  Now, with Beltlock, I can have peace of mind knowing that it will not be easy for them to release the belt without adult help.  It is easy to remove the Beltlock using a key to press down in the middle and release the seat belt.  The Beltlock simply slips over the seat belt receiver end and the belt lock is clicked safely without little fingers being able to press the release mechanism.

{Book Tour & Review} The Making of Nebraska Brown by Louise Caiola ~ Amazon GC GIVEAWAY

Making Tour

The Making of Nebraska Brown

The Making of Nebraska BrownThe last thing eighteen-year-old Ann Leigh remembers is running from her boyfriend in a thick Nebraska cornfield. This morning she’s staring down a cool Italian sunrise, an entire continent from the life she once knew. The events of the eighteen months in between have inexplicably gone missing from her memory.

All at once she’s living with Tommy, an attractive, young foreigner asking for her continued love. Though he’s vaguely familiar, she recalls a boy named Shane in

America who she reluctantly agreed to marry. Juggling a new world while her old one is still M.I.A is difficult enough without the terrifying movie scenes spinning a dizzy loop in her mind: glimpses of a devastating house fire, a romance gone wrong, an unplanned pregnancy, and a fractured family – each claiming to be part of who she once was – a girl and a past somehow discarded.

Ann Leigh must collect the pieces of herself to become whole again, but she doesn’t know who to trust especially when Tommy’s lies become too obvious to ignore. And above all, her heart aches to discover what became of the child she may or may not have given birth to.

The Making of Nebraska Brown tells the story of one girl’s coming apart from the inside and the great lengths she’ll go to reclaim herself and find her way home.

My Review:

The Making of Nebraska Brown tells the story of one girl’s coming apart
from the inside and the great lengths she’ll go to reclaim herself and
find her way home.  It is an emotional story that jumps back and forth through time between 2002 and 2004.  Although believable to some extent, I think it would have been better to set it further back in time to when having a baby outside of marriage was more taboo than it is in society today.  Her situation is not one that is common, but one that does take the reader on an emotional journey of the dangers of romance verses love, unplanned pregnancy, family tension and struggles, and amnesia thrown in the mix.  Two male characters with very different personalities and not knowing who to trust.

The story took many twists and turns that it was not easy to guess where it would lead early on, and took quite a bit of reading to get the idea of what the ending would be. This book is not quick and easy to read.  It is one that will take time and attention so as not to lose any of the details along the way.  It was a pretty good read in my opinion, but make sure you have plenty of time to really read it as it does get confusing at times if you do not give the story your full attention.

{Review} Finger Nail Art from Vinyl Disorder - customize your nails for any occasion

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-14286580641422_2302_0

Finger nail art is growing in popularity these days. You don’t have to
spend an outrageous amount of money to go to a salon and get trendy and
unique nail art. Vinyl Disorder’s nail art decals make it easier than
ever to get the look you want. Just paint your nails and add the decal
of your choice! After the nail art design is

applied you can paint a
clear coat over the top to make it more secure and last longer! At Vinyl
Disorder you can choose any of our designs or contact us for custom
products. With our wide variety of finger nail decals, the possibilities
are endless!

My Review:

I was offered a chance to review some fun vinyl decals for finger nails from Vinyl Disorder.  When they arrived I was disappointed.  I had already went to their website to check out the huge selection and variety of  vinyl nail decals they have available and what I received was nothing like the selection on their website.  They were 2 tiny papers with tiny silver stars.  Very similar to what I can purchase at my local dollar store.  With the fun shapes and designs like: music signs, peace signs inside hearts, mustaches, holiday decals and so much more, I guess I expected them to send a product to showcase their fun and unique main decals instead of something cheap and easy to find at local stores.  I would have shown  you but my camera battery died as I was getting ready to take pictures, and getting a 5 year old to sit still for pictures is not always easy.

The good news, they do stay on pretty well.  And the decals from Vinyl Disorder are only $2.99 per set and come in a huge variety of designs for nearly any occasion!  Here are some I personally would love to have:

{Review & Guest Post} Secrets, Spies & Sherlock Blog Tour & Giveaway on Mom Loves 2 Read

Welcome to Day 4 of the SECRETS,

The Dark Lady
by Irene Adler and Secrets
& Spies: Treason
by Jo Macauley. Each stop on the 2-week tour will
feature fun posts and a chance to win a set of finished copies!  Today’s post features Treason.

Life of an Actress in 17th Century London

Shortly
after Shakespeare’s death in 1623, King Charles I was deposed and Oliver
Cromwell and the Puritans took control of England. The Puritans believed
theater to be immoral, and it was banned in 1642 until Charles II resumed the
throne in 1660. Under Charles’ new regime, women were allowed to act on stage
for the first time, making this an exciting time to be alive for a young
actress such as Beth Johnson.

Charles
himself sponsored the King’s Company, the troupe Beth belongs to in Treason,
which became the first company to hire female actresses in 1661, including Nell
Gwyn. Gwyn’s story may sound familiar to those reading Treason since,
like Beth, she became an actress at 14, after a year of being an “orange-girl”
(selling oranges outside the theater). Nell went on to become one of the most
famous actresses of the time, perhaps boding well for our young protagonist.

The
addition of female actresses had a huge impact on Restoration comedy. The
largely male audience was fascinated by the novelty of women performing in the
risqué plays of the period, which were encouraged by Charles and his debauched
court. Before this time, boys would play the female roles — a practice that
became especially complicated in such plays as Shakespeare’s As You Like It,
which featured a male actor playing the character of Rosalind, who in turn
masquerades as a man in the play and at one point imitates a young woman — or
in other words, a boy playing a girl pretending to be a boy pretending to be a
girl. Whew!

However,
in 1662, a law was passed stating that female roles could only be played by
women, in order to eliminate the practice of male cross-dressing that
scandalized the Puritans who still held influence at the time. Ironically, this
led to the development of “breeches roles” in which actresses appeared in male
clothes, often to play a heroine who disguises herself as a boy. A quarter of
the plays produced during this time featured breeches roles — and in Treason,
Beth finds herself inhabiting a similar part in the fictional play Love’s
Desires Spurn’d,
crossing swords with actors much older than her. These
cross-dressing roles allowed female actresses the same freedom as men, and some
critics regard them as subversive of gender roles and empowering for the female
audience.

Male and
female actors alike became celebrities for the first time during this period,
and drew more people to the theater than the plays themselves or even the
playwrights — a change from the days of Shakespeare and Marlowe. With two
theaters competing for popular actors, the actors were able to negotiate
unprecedented deals, including company shares and higher salaries. Yet, despite
their popularity, women did not have the same status as male actors. They did
not receive equal pay, and while many men went on to become playwrights, very
few women did. However, several women did become theater managers, as Beth
desires to do in Treason. Lady Henrietta Maria Davenant, who succeeded
her husband as manager of the Duke’s Company, went on to make it the most
successful theater in London, producing the plays of the first female
playwright, Aphra Behn, whose comedies featured strong female characters that
made their own choices — much like the fiercely independent heroine at the
heart of Treason.

About Sherlock, Lupin & Me: The Dark Lady by Irene
Adler:

While
on summer vacation, little Irene Adler meets a young William Sherlock Holmes.
The two share stories of pirates and have battles of wit while running wild on
the sunny streets and rooftops. When Sherlock's friend, Lupin, joins in on the
fun, they all become fast friends. But the good times end abruptly when a dead
body floats ashore on the nearby beach. The young detective trio will have to
put all three of their heads together to solve this mystery.

My Review:

Wow, this is an amazing story!  I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and have a large hardcover book that has many of the Sherlock Holmes classic stories within that is a personal favorite in my home library.  Finding that an author has taken on the task of creating a young Sherlock Holmes story and adding in Irene Adler and Lupin as well, got my heart racing at the thought of getting to read and review this book.

And, it does not disappoint.  Sherlock, Lupin & Me is written from Irene's point of view (and authored by Irene Adler) and tells the reader about her first meeting with Sherlock as a young girl.  It takes the reader on an adventure as they struggle to solve their very first mystery together.  It is very well written, a fast paced, keeps you on your toes read that engages the readers' imagination and love of adventure.  I could not put it down!  I definitely recommend this for middle grade readers up to adults who love mysteries and adventure - it is a great read for most any Sherlock fan!

About Secrets
& Spies: Treason
by Jo Macauley:

Fourteen-year-old Beth Johnson is a talented and
beautiful young actress. She is also a spy. The year is 1664, and Charles II is
on the throne, but all is not well in the bustling city of London, and there are
those who would gladly kill the king and destroy the Monarchy. One morning, a
mysterious ghost ship drifts up the Thames. Sent to investigate by the King's
Master of Secrets, Alan Strange, Beth quickly finds herself embroiled in a
dangerous adventure. Will Beth be able to unravel the plot to kill the King
before it's too late?

My Review:

Another big hit with this reader/reviewer from author Jo Macauley.  Once again a well written book that is an "edge of your seat" page turner.  Don't start reading this one unless you have time to continue to the end.  It was hard to put down and walk away from.  More great adventure, mystery and ghosts to tease a mystery lovers' mind.

Beth is a great spy and up and coming actress who must face danger to find the answer to a uniquely intriguing mystery.  Great read for middle grade and up.

than with a fun GIVEAWAY?

{Review} CFBA Book Tour ~ Dating, Dining and Desperation by Melody Carlson

Dating, Dining, and Desperation

B&H Books (March 1, 2014)

by

Melody Carlson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Daphne Ballinger has learned to accept her deceased, eccentric aunt’s strange request that she marry in order to inherit her estate, along with taking over her aunt’s hometown paper’s advice column.

But knowing and accepting that God’s will be done becomes harder when a new neighbor, a divorced socialite, learns of Daphne’s predicament and takes on the task of finding her the perfect man, even if it includes speed dating.

When God does open Daphne’s heart, it is instead to take in a young girl left parentless and in the care of her dying grandmother. It may be a temporary arrangement until the girl’s uncle returns from the Marines, but God uses Daphne to speak His heavenly love and protection into the life of the child -- whom Daphne soon discovers has a very handsome and single uncle.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Dating, Dining, and Desperation, go HERE.

 My Review:

What a fun story.  This is the second book in the Dear Daphne series, and though it is fine to
read this one as a stand alone story, it does make more sense if you
read the series in order - book 1 is Lock, Stock and Over a Barrel.

This story had me laughing, crying and sighing, sometimes all in one chapter.  It is full of funny situations, well-meaning match-makers, and some interesting and entertaining happenings between Daphne and a few quirky men she is encouraged to date.  The story is written more of a journal style, explaining what is going on in Daphne's life as she tries to fulfill the requirement in her late Aunt Dee's Will.

The returning characters from book 1 are wonderfully interesting and the new characters keep the story flowing and the action going.  The story is well
written and not confusing, it is easy to read and keep up with everything going on. As for it being a "christian" book.  There is no "preaching" in it, it is a good clean read where the heroine does talk to God, attend
church, and live out the commandment to love your neighbors.

The author The supporting characters are very interesting with returning characters
from the first book as well as introductions of new friends. It is well
written and not confusing. There isn't really a main hero - well, kind
of and kind of not. You'll have to read it to figure that out.

There
is not much religious content, but the heroine does talk to God, attend
church, and live out the commandment to love your neighbors.  As this is only book 2 of the series, and I believe there are at least 2 more coming out, I will continue reading to see what happens to Daphne!  Hope you will join me!
