{Book Spotlight} Rise & Shine by Sandra D. Bricker

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Rise and Shine

River North; New Edition edition (May 1, 2014)

by  Sandra D. Bricker

ABOUT THE BOOK

Shannon Malone thought she'd found her happy ending when she married Edmund Ridgeway, but a diving accident on their honeymoon left her in a coma. Waking
up to the news that she's thirty years old would have been daunting enough . . . but she also learns that Edmund has lost his interim battle with cancer and the
world has marched on without her.

Her gorgeous doctor, Daniel Petros, seems to know everything about her and becomes Shannon's tour guide into a whole new world of
madness where reality television has taken over the

planet and everyone's life appears to revolve around a tiny screen on their cell phones!

As Shannon struggles to navigate through the changes-both in the world and in her-she also must discern real memories from imagined ones. Did she really ever wear capris pants and entertain in her living room, or was that Laura Petrie from her favorite classic TV show?

And where is her beloved dog, Freeway? Oh, wait!

That was Jonathan and Jennifer Hart's dog, not hers.

Shannon's three elderly aunts flit through her life in true Sleeping Beauty style with her well-being always a priority.
And Edmund's sister Millicent descends like the Evil Queen she is, trying to extract Shannon from any claim on the Ridgeway family fortune. When a tornado moves through town and Shannon is knocked unconscious, will Daniel's kiss awaken her once and for all?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Rise and Shine, go HERE.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

For
more than a decade, Sandra D. Bricker lived in Los Angeles. While
honing her chosen craft of screenwriting in every spare moment, she
worked as a personal assistant and publicist to some of daytime
television's hottest stars. When her mother became ill in Florida, she
walked away from that segment of her life and moved across the country
to take on a new role: Caregiver.

The author says that
it was her 8th novel that opened the door to finding her way as a
writer. "I'm a Christian woman, first and foremost," she says. "So it
was a bit of a dream-come-true when Summerside Press chose me as one of
two authors to launch the Love Finds You line."

Sandie's real-life role as cancer survivor has
parlayed into her steadfast commitment to raising awareness and funds
for ovarian cancer research. Spearheading a series of devotionals for
Summerside Press (such as the popular His Grace is Sufficient...Decaf is Not), the author has stipulated that a portion of each contributor's proceeds will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

"Being allowed to combine my faith and my humor with
raising funds for my pet projects ... and still pursue my writing
dream," says Bricker, "well, that's the best of all worlds, as far as
I'm concerned!"

And one of the author's pet projects is animal rescue,
evidenced by the special bond she has created with one particular
formerly-abandoned puppy -- a red-haired collie with "killer brown eyes
and the heart of the class clown."

Disclosure: I did NOT receive a copy of this book, it just sounded so good I just had to share!  I've added it to my TBR list. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”.

{Review} Finding Faith in Slow Motion by Damon J. Gray

Faith is neither static nor instantaneous. It is not something we
stumble upon and instantly understand. Neither is it a monolithic,
one-dimensional, singular entity that has but one face, one color, one
fragrance. It is many-faceted, multi-dimensional, and appears
differently depending on one's angle to the Son.

In Finding Faith in
Slow Motion, Damon Gray examines faith from myriad angles and

through
gut-wrenching life experiences, as he asks regarding faith, "What is
that stuff" Spanning the emotional gamut from laughter to tears, Gray
challenges us to define our faith and redefine it, to look at it from a
multitude of perspectives and define it again.

The writing is
intentionally evocative and playful, offering the reader the ability to
identify with Gray as he wrestles with the weighty subject matter of
finding faith.

Review:

Author Damon J. Gray's book, Finding Faith in Slow Motion is full of ideas on how to explore all levels of faith.  As he takes us step by step through our growth in our faith and belief in God. Damon examines faith from many
angles and through real life experiences, he asks, "What is Faith?" His writing is both evocative and playful as he leads the reader through the matter of finding
faith.  I enjoyed reading through this book and how it constantly challenged me to re-examine my own walk with God.

About the Author

Damon J. Gray
Damon Joseph Gray was born in Plainville Kansas in 1961, the
youngest of four, with three older sisters. He took his undergraduate
degree in 1983, at Baker University, studying Mass Communication with an
emphasis in radio broadcasting and newsprint. A year later, Damon
enrolled in the Harding University School of Biblical Studies, where he
studied the Bible for two years. In 2012, he completed his Master of
Business Administration in Information Technology Management at Capella
University.

Damon is a driven man, and very relationally
oriented. He particularly enjoys transparent, late-night discussions
with cherished friends - friends with whom long periods of silence are
okay - friends who can simply look at one another and know the message
is, "I like being with you." His dearest friend in the world is his
high-school sweetheart, his wife, Alean Melinda.

{Book Review} Gabriel's Bride by Amy Lillard

Gabriel's Bride by Amy Lillard

Rachel Yoder has two choices: marry Gabriel Fisher or move to Ohio. As an orphan, Rachel doesn’t have much to offer; any match she can make will be a good one. She just didn’t plan on Gabriel with his big hands and permanent frown.
As a widower Gabriel needs help caring for the farm and his six children. But he never thought he’d marry a

slip of a girl who barely reaches his chin.
Yet as time passes, Gabriel finds himself thinking about a real marriage. They have spoken vows to God and each other, but can he risk his heart with Rachel?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Gabriel's Bride, go HERE.

Review:

Gabriel's Bride is so good that I could not put it down until I had read it through to the end. This book is about a father(Gabriel) who is a widower who finds that his only daughter had run off to try the English world
before she marries her intended. While dealing with that, he is placed
in a position to help with a funeral where the only surviving member of
the family is the niece of the woman that passed. She and Gabriel marry,
but she is concerned that he will never fully give his heart to her. By
the end of the book, I was completely absorbed in the story and could not believe it was done.  I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more by author Amy Lillard in the near future.

{Review} Lots to do in Line at DISNEY ~ the perfect entertainment for waiting in line!

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links:

How many times have you had to wait in line with kiddos, only for them to turn from "perfectly behaved angels" into cranky little terrors?  Not to mention how aggravating it can be for adults to wait in line patiently, but then to deal with bored and frustrated kiddos can turn a fun family vacation into a nightmare.

Well, author Meredith Lyn Pierce has come up with a unique and fun way to entertain not only the kids but the adults too while waiting for a ride at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.  She has taken the annoying

waiting in line and turned it into a fun adventure just waiting to happen just by
using Disney’s own visuals to create two books packed full of games for every ride
line in each park.  And the games are made so that even younger children can play along!

Lots To Do In Line Disneyland 2nd Ed.

contains 1,100+ engaging questions that
will have the whole family hunting for the answers. There are 90 in-line
hunts for hidden queue treasure buried deep in the wait plus park-wide
scavenger hunts for each of the parks. If you run out of questions in
a line, there are even 22 collections which will have you scrutinizing
your surroundings and even fellow guests to gain points. You need not
have a vast knowledge of Disney Trivia to play. In fact, if you can
recognize Mickey and Minnie you are all set. All of the answers can
be found only in line at Disneyland.

Lots To Do In Line Walt Disney World

contains 1,282 questions including 109 in-line
hunts listing over 1,850 items to find. Each of the four parks also has a park-wide
scavenger hunt. There's even a "still growing" list of animals on the Tree of Life with 138 entries.
Again, if you run out of questions in
a line, there are 22 collections for points anywhere. You need not
have a vast knowledge of Disney Trivia to play. In fact, if you can
recognize Mickey and Minnie you are all set. All of the answers can
be found only in line at Disneyland.

It is unfortunate that my family's Disney trip this year had to be cancelled, but I'm still hopeful that in the near future I can still manage to take us all to Disney World - so I'll be hanging on to these books for that future time - and even better - there is also an APP that can be downloaded right to your iPod or iPhone so you don't have to pack the book along if you don't want!  But I love that these books are just the right size to fit in a backpack and are great to entertain the whole family in those long lines or even just taking a break from the busy day - there are even games that can be played while eating or resting along the way!

Not only that but instead of each kid playing electronic games or listening to music with earphones, the whole family can participate and enjoy the games together - after all that is the point of a family vacation - to spend more quality time interacting together!  You can even have teams - kids against adults - boys against girls - or mix it up with Dad/daughters against Mom/Grandma/sons - there is a ton of ways to creatively have fun even during the not-so-fun moments!

My Review:

I have never been to Disney - Not Disney World, nor Disney Land, but have always wanted to plan a trip and take my kiddos.  My husband and I had planned to surprise them over Spring Break this year with a trip to Disney World so I immediately went online to search for the best way to prepare for a trip to a huge amusement park like DW.

One of the first places that many bloggers sent me was to Passporter.com to find their amazing trip planning guide.  When I received it I was completely amazed and a bit overwhelmed - it is so organized!  There is nearly everything I could possibly need contained inside!  Pages and Pages full of great information, maps, pockets to keep my personal papers, receipts, tickets and more safe and secure.  It is sturdy, spiral bound and easy to use.

What a perfect travel planner and companion for a novice like me, but I've also read posts from experienced Disney travelers who ALWAYS use Passporter to make their trip planning easy and much less stressful!  I highly recommend anyone planning a Disney grip to grab Passporter - oh, and if that isn't enough of an incentive - Passporter is also available in ebook - and is currently on sale for HALF OFF!

Passporter is frequently sending me updates on their information - I've included a tiny snippet from the most recent email - it also includes ticket coupons and even a Free Dining, Travel Tips, Discount Coupons, Insider Hints and Tricks and much much more!

one DiDi iPad-powered bear + Magic Toys

 and one TuTu
iPod/iPhone-powered bunny + Magic Toys

*Please note that
we provide the plush DiDi and TuTu toys and their free iTunes applications, but
do NOT provide the iPad or iPod/iPhone*

Now, about TuTu and Didi

TuTu is a soft, plush toy enhanced with our powerful software and Magic Touch™ add-on toys that kids use to feed Tutu, brush her teeth, give her milk and play games.

Watch a video on TuTu here and share her on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest below.

TuTu comes with:

  • TuTu plush doll

  • Magic Touch™ apple, carrot, milk, toothbrush and ring

  • App with registration code

DiDi is an iPad powered toy for kids preparing for elementary school. We think you'll love DiDi because:

  1. Feel Good About Playtime - DiDi’s games and storybooks are fun, yet educational.

  2. Real Toy, Real Play - Unlike an app,
kids can bond with DiDi because he is a soft teddy bear they can hold
and feed with our proprietary accessory toys.

  3. Tamagotchi Experience - Care for DiDi to earn prizes and unlock new games and books.

Every DiDi comes with a DiDi plush toy, 5 Magic Touch™ toys, and a copy of the DiDi app to run his games and books.

Do you kiddos like to play on your iPhone? iPod touch or iPad?  Do you always know what games or apps they are interacting with?  What if you could turn your device into a fun and unique toddler/preschool friendly playmate?  At the same time, protecting your device in a cuddly friend?

Well, here is your chance to try it out.  Roam and Wander have created these adorable interactive cuddly friends for little ones to love.  TuTu is an adorable pink plush rabbit that children can feed, care for and love.  She is powered using an iPhone or iPod touch - with the TuTu app (free with TuTu) downloaded.

DiDi is a cuddly teddy bear that uses an iPad or iPad mini with app (free with DiDi) to make a fun interactive friend that most children will absolutely love!  My 6 year old daughter is constantly playing with TuTu (she also plays with DiDi but I don't leave my iPad mini inside DiDi).  She loves to be able to give her a drink of milk, feed her and brush her teeth.  I have tried several times to find TuTu and DiDi to test them out for this review/giveaway only to find her hiding in her room with them!  She really loves them!

My only issue is that since these adorable toys/apps are still new, there are not many games/books yet for DiDi - but with the Kickstarter Campaign - it will have many more features coming soon - so once you have DiDi and TuTu - any updates will add new and exciting games, books and more!

TuTu and DiDi are great for back to school, holiday gifts, birthdays or traveling!  TuTu retails for only $39.99 and DiDi will retail for $59.99 - BUT right now - with the DiDi Kickstarter campaign - you can purchase TuTu and DiDi for a HUGE discount! But hurry - the Kickstarter ends on May 21st and they will both go back to full price!

{Review} Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

When offered the chance to review some of the Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops in Wild Cherry flavor, I had to grab the opportunity right away.  I have tried a variety of throat drops from the store over the years with very few that I could tolerate.  Usually the flavor is way too strong or there is little to no improvement from using them.

With Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops I found a drop that is mild in flavor, soft and chewy rather than hard and helps soothe my sore throat aches.  I have only tried

the Wild Cherry flavor so far, but it does come in Natural Honey, a NEW licorice flavor (yuck) and will soon also be in Lemon-Citrus!

Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops come in bags as well as travel friendly containers for use at home or on the go.  Great to keep in your purse, car or at work for those oncoming cold symptoms!  Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops can be found at many local stores in my area - you can find a store near you HERE

Recently, Pine Brothers was acquired by the creator and former owner of
Airborne, Victoria Knight-McDowell, for her new company 3 Sisters Home
Products™. Much time and effort has been spent locating the original
Pine Brothers recipes, redesigning the packaging, and creating an
exciting yet classic new look. Pine Brothers is once again being made in
America, and was launched nationally in fall 2011. And indeed, old Mr.
Pine has succeeded yet again in "making people happy." God bless him!

{Review} ArmourBite® Mouthpiece ~ Great for everyday, sports and more!

Performance DNA:

Quick and easy “boil and bite” fit

Available in sizes Youth (Age 11-) and Adult (Age 12+)

Low-profile design for comfort

Latex free

Not for use with braces

Made in USA

My Review:

When my son was playing JFL Football, he needed a good mouthpiece to protect his teeth and jaw during games.  The one we purchased at the sporting goods store ended up hurting his mouth no matter how we trimmed it.  With the ArmourBite® Mouthpiece, it is much easier to get a good fit the first time.

I have also noticed that when we walk for exercise I often clench my teeth which results in a headache and sometimes jaw pain.  I decided to use this ArmourBite® Mouthpiece for myself when exercising to see if there was any improvement.

It is so easy to fit it correctly - I just put a pan of water on to boil on the stove, added the mouthpiece per the instructions and when I bit down it conformed to the shape of my mouth and teeth perfectly the first time.

Since using it I have noticed less jaw aches and less headaches after walking.  I would recommend this product for athletes of most any sport, adolescents and adults who exercise by biking, hiking, walking, jogging or whatever you do.  A great way to keep your mouth healthy and your smile bright while still enjoying sports or exercise!

{Review} Shake your Pills with the SHAKE Pill Bottle from Sabi

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Sabi wanted to create an alternative bottle-style pill box that would be
more stylish and more fun to use, that would sit on bedside table or
kitchen counter and be the first thing you reach for in the morning,
that would help you stick to your daily vitamin or pill routine. It was
an intriguing design challenge.

It was important that the pill box cap would be easy to open and
not strain the hands and wrists. It was also important to us that the
pill box

would only release one or two pills at a time, to reduce
handling of pills and germ transfer.

So they created the SHAKE pill bottle-inspired pill box. Transfer your
pills into the SHAKE pill box, close the lid, shake, open the lid and
retrieve one or two pills from the tray.

The SHAKE pill box lid is inset with an expiry date dial and there’s an
inset cork caddy at the bottom of the pill box so you can plug the pill
box opening to ensure pills remain inside the pill box (rather than
rattle around on the tray under the lid) during rough travel.

The SHAKE pill box is guaranteed to make taking your pills safer, easier, and yes - even fun!

My Review:

I like the idea behind the Shake Pill box created by Sabi, but for my personal needs it was not of great use.  So I had my son try it out with his medicines and he loves it.  He likes that it is large enough to hold all of his medicines for more than a month's worth, and is fun to use.  The lid closes securely to keep the medicines contained inside and the turn dial date on the inside of the lid is handy for helping remember whether he took his pills the day before or not.  A strong and durable construction that will last a lifetime.  Not great for homes with small children as this is NOT a childproof container.

{Review} Cold Steel Kudu Knife ~ Strong, Durable, Reliable Swords, Knives and More!

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Swords of the East, Inc. offers a large selection of functional Japanese Samurai
swords and authentic, functional katana for collectors and practicing
martial artists. They also offer a selection of knives, American War Swords, and much much more.

You'll also find premium Japanese swords from Cold
Steel, Paul Chen swords by Hanwei, authentic Samurai swords hand-forged
from Imperial Forge and Thaitsuki Nihonto, and competition-grade katana
swords from

Generation 2 and Last Legend.

For this review, I was sent a wonderful knife, Cold Steel Kudu, from Swords of the East ~ http://www.swordsoftheeast.com/

The Cold Steel Kudu, has a Krupp 4116 Stainless steel flat ground blade, heat treated to
Rc 56-57 for better edge holding ability and ease of re-sharpening, and
a thin razor sharp edge. For safety, it has a thoroughly tested
locking mechanism and will hold the blade rigidly
open until you decide to close it by pulling up on the ring attached to
the back spring.

The handle of the Kudu also reflects our dedication to
making an effective and affordable folder. It’s made of 43%
glass reinforced Zytel®. This material has proven to be
extremely strong, and is stiff enough to compliment the blade and spring
when locked open. Plus, the gripping surface has a wood grain texture
for traction and features an attractive polished steel Kudu horn emblem
for a little extra flair! It makes a wonderful work
knife, utility knife, bait knife, or hunting knife.

My Review:

I have to agree with everything in the description except for one small issue.  To fold the blade back down, I

have to pull very hard on the attached ring, while pushing on the knife handle and blade at the same time.  It is not easy to do and often hurts my fingers a bit to do it.  Yet, I like that it is not easy to fold, because then I know it will remain strong and secure until I choose to close it.  So it is both annoying and good at the same time.

The blade is strong and cuts through anything I try it on.  Naturally I did not try it on concrete or anything, just food, paper, cardboard and a small stick in the backyard.  But it stays sharp and strong with every use.  I can not see it being used as a pocket knife as it is too long to comfortably be carried in a pocket, but my husband and son have both decided it will make a great knife for Boy Scout Camping Trips.  So, since there is only 1 knife and 2 of them, they will have to figure out who gets it when - lol.  Maybe I'll buy them another one from SOTE - I'd love to get this one for them:  Bear Grylls Scout Knife

Both the Kudo and the Bear Grillis would make great Father's Day or Birthday Gifts - or a Great gift for a Boy Scout who just earned a new level!!  Have a collector in the family?  Check out SOTE's HUGE selection of swords as well!

{Review} Folio Pill box - my favorite way to store and travel with medicine

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

The FOLIO pill box is made for those on a twice daily a.m./p.m. regimen
of vitamins, supplements, or pills. It is a cut above the standard
14-door pill box and is much easier to load, with one universal lid.

It’s also much easier to extract pills from the FOLIO pill box. With
other pill organizers, it’s nearly impossible to get your fingers into
the pill box compartments and it’s necessary to turn the entire pill box
upside-down

to shake out its contents. The FOLIO pill box features
rounded compartments that make extraction of pills quick and easy.

The FOLIO pill box is also much sleeker than any of the twice-daily pill
organizers out there. It fits elegantly and stylishly into purse or
briefcase, and can be taken out anywhere.

My Review:

Of all the pill box and medication storage containers that I have used over the years, this one is by far my favorite.  With 14 individual pockets for daily or twice daily medicines it is great for use at home and while traveling. I really like how sleek, and stylish the case is and that it is easy to open and close with the blue elastic strap.  It does not look like a traditional pill box! The only negative to this Folio style pill box is that it does not fit a large vitamins along with multiple other pills very well.  It is best for only a small amount of pills, as long as there is not more than 1 larger pill.  Since I only take a few daily meds, it works great for my needs.  But I would not recommend it for those who take medication more than 1 time a day, or take multiple larger pills.
